My voice over the internet ( privacy issues )

You said that you have to say a key word then Homey sends my voice to a STT on the internet, but won't my voice be sent up to the STT to do the key word recognition or do you have a custom STT running onboard for this. I am thinking of privacy issues here.

Thanks

The keyword recognition (Hey Homey) is done locally. So only whatever you said after Hey Homey, until some silence is sent online.

  • Did you guys considered my previous suggestion about caching (and periodic check) the most frequently used voice commands?
A bit like how DNS works.

Unfortunately it does not work like that. Audio data never is exactly the same as a previous command, so it's impossible to cache.

  • OK. We'll see. In The Netherlands we have very fast and stable internet connection so I'm not worried :-D

  • When in doubt: try tot use voice recognition on android (or any other mobile platform). It works pretty fast even on a 3g network.
Another advantage of separating the voice recognition and logic is that neither party will have the full context.
If you are really worried/paranoid about your privacy, I would,t use home automation to begin with. (Or any google/Microsoft/Samsung product for that matter). Adequate protection is always good though, so it's important to ask.
