Google just announced their Homey: Google Home.

Probably a lot less open, but the speech probably works pretty well

  • kinda curious what signals it can do

From the information that's given at the moment it is exactly the same as amazon's echo.

So only Internet (http) related things are able (like hue thanks to the hub, music streaming), but no infrared/Z-Wave/zigbee etc.

So more like an assistent then a controller like homey. (thats what it is called even, Google assistent, what the drive is behind it)

Het schijnt dat de hele wereld moeite heeft met Nederlandse taal, dan doet Homey het niet slecht
  • Omg I hope Athom have a patent on their housing design.  It looks very similar

    Hahaha LOL!
    Nice photoshop!
  • Im curious about something about the video. At one point, the boy asks something about the nearest star (Alpha Centauri), and then asks 'can you show that on the TV', and it does.

I find it hard to believe it can work exactly like that, but if it does, phew, they are good.

    @KoenMartens ;
You can do that with homey thanks to the chromecast and youtube apps :D
  • bvdbosbvdbos Member
@KoenMartens That's not too hard to make, if you have the data. As we already have a wikipedia-app and the wolfram-app we could send a picture or video to the television through upnp.

It supports the Cast-protocol, so if you have a Chromecast connected to your tv, it should be possible.
  • I'm gonna see where this goes but it certainly doesnt look as good as Homey (to my taste that is). As for is info goes it's not really a controller as Homey is as well.

I think that its not that hard if you have a capable TV and that specific device. If you don't it doesn't work. Like Homey that does not work correctly with infrared but if you have a smart tv it is already a bit easier to do things. Its all about the eco system. Things that can talk to eachother
  • Or did @KoenMartens mean that Google understands the context.
If question number contains no subject, it assumes it's regarding the previous question.
    Yes, it does that.
Google Now does the exact same thing quite some time now.
Ask for the nearest Chinese Restaurant.
After the answer, ask Google "Take me there"

Can we hack it and put Homey software on it?  ;)

Another big announcement at the IO was Google opening their natural speech API. Not sure if this is something Athom can use? More info: https://cloud.google.com/speech/ (As good voice recognition is the only big missing thing in homey for me).

I suggested this some time ago, thought the speech-api was open already... But seeing tweakers, I think Homey does a pretty good job already...

That is what I meant, and i did not know Google could already do that. I believe context-based things are very hard, and I don't see Homey having this exact scenario in the next year:

"Ok Homey, do I have lights in the livingroom?" Homey: "Yes there are 3" You: "OK Homey, turn those on".

I think the main advantage of Google vs Athom, is the large amount of money, resources and advertising they can throw at it. So Athom will have to do their best to keep up the development...

And the main disadvantage that they generally dont want to work with competitors projects. I do not see Google integrating Spotify when there is Google Music, for example.

Athom and other smaller companies can win market by incorporating all the devices out there, not just a selection.
  • And I'm not happy with all personal info what is going to google and is gonna be used or sold.

Not surprising in the least, but looks like Apple joins the fray as well...
