Cloud based sensory

Yes, another wacky idea from me :-).

I was thinking about weather stations and how silly it is to own one if my neighbour down the street already owns one, outputting the same data. This got me thinking. What if you could configure your GPS position (with fuzzy accuracy of 200 meters for privacy) of your homey and homey could read out and collect sensory information (for example from your NetAtmo weather station) which you choose to share. Once Homey knows the sensory information, nothing is keeping homey from sharing this with a central server. If other users can then subscribe to these sensory feeds in their neighbourhood or even city, they would have a lot more information to use in flows without having to purchase the expensive sensors.

It would be really nice if you could choose to share it publicly, or only amongst friends. (For example, I want to split the investment with my neighbour, but not share it with the whole world).

This feature would set homey apart with regards to added value. Also Homey could potentially monetise the (potentially) largest sensory network in the Netherlands/Europe/Globe! (when explicitly allowed by their users ;-))

  • Also think about using the average of multiple streams for accuracy, reliability and making it more tamper proof.
There are more possibilities than just temperature or wind speed. Think about twilight sensors for detecting when it gets dark outside for example. Or a sky quality meter, which tells you when it is a very clear sky at night and you should really be watching the stars. Or a particle meter which tells you there is a lot of pollution or a fire nearby, for which you might want to close your windows.... Just some ideas.

Check http://www.wunderground.com/. The coverage is already quite good and it does exactly what you suggest, right?
  • Thanks D, that does look like it covers some ground indeed. It doesn't seem there are any efforts yet to build an app for this yet though. Also, it seems limited to forecasts and temperatures judging the api page. I would like to be able to gather rain meter information as well, to determine when I need to sprinkle my garden for example. As mentioned, the idea is broader than just climate sensory, but could provide a framework for all kinds of sensors.
  • Homewizard has a simular solution as what you are suggesting.

people with weather devices are able to either share or not share their sensor results with other users.
  • Love the idea :D
  • NetAtmo allready support this: https://www.netatmo.com/weathermap and it seems to me that data is allready available: https://dev.netatmo.com/doc/methods/getpublicdata
