Best door / motion sensor

Hello fellow forum members,

I made my first step in home automation when I purchased the Homey December last year. I received my Homey last April. Since then I purchased Hue lights and some 433 mhz devices and some other small stuff. For a newbie in home automation I had some frustation about Homey in the beginning. A high trial and error level to get something working even with the simple things. That high trial and  error has deminished over the last months and I want to purchase a few other things now.

I am looking for door and motion sensors for the front and backdoor and the living room. Which devices work best with Homey?

Greetinx,

Fiek

  • my fibaro door sensor (non +) work great and you can add temp sensor if you like.
  • Don't know which device works best but for me it is the Aeotec sensor: http://aeotec.com/hidden-z-wave-door-sensor
Does what it has to do and can be mounted invisible
  • I am think about purchasing the fibaro motion sensor and door sensor. I don't know if there are cheaper sensors with the same quality
  • I recently bought a fibaro sensor and switch, both z-wave+. The switch works fine, but the sensor has some trouble. It has something to do with range, the mesh-network, waking up or a combination of those factors.

When the sensor is closeby Homey it works great though. I believe the non-plus variant has less/no problems.

@Peter4209 I  want to buy the plus motion sensor. Where is the best Place to get it and what do you mean with closeby? how close?
  • @fiek : the door sensor is a battery-device so it should connect to the zwave-mesh but doesn't act as a node for the mesh (would cost too much battery). There are several stores specialized in Zwave-stuff, like Robbshop.

When I place the sensor in the living room (in the same room as Homey) it works great. Halfway the hall it still works. But when I put the sensor a bit further away on the wall (same ground level, but other side of the house, approximately 10 meters away from Homey), the sensor/Homey starts showing buggy behaviour. A z-wave plus switch which hangs near the sensor works great though, so range is probably not a issue.
  • There is an issue with the Fibaro FGMS-001 sensors, this should be fixed in the next FW-upgrade.

Ok. That could be a problem. The first sensor will be placed in the living room where Homey is placed. The other one in the hall which is aproximately 7 metres away. So Maybe I 'll wait till the next FW release

I have the NEO switch working for a week now: http://www.szneo.com/en/products/show.php?id=188
With the app made by Marco, it works perfectly: https://apps.athom.com/app/com.neo

The range is better then I expected. On the ground floor were homey is, through 2 walls about 8m all is working fine.
    I paid € 22 via Aliexpress.

You are correct, but there were several opportunities that let to the lower pricing e.g. 11-11 and black Friday. Sometimes you just have to wait for the right moment :)
  • Guys thanks very much for your suggestions. The difference between fibaro door sensor and the neo sensor is 7 euro's, so I think I Will choose the fibaro
  • Could someone please comment on the issues with the Fibaro Z-wave plus motion sensor and when these devices are expected to work properly ;-) What Firmware is referred to? Homey or the sensor itself?

    Thanks in advance!

  • It MIGHT be fixed in the next homey update, but no definitive answer from athom about the issue.
They only could recreate the issue at the moment

We don't know anything about firmware updates of fibaro devices, fibaro can be very silent about that
  • and if there would be a firmware update of a fibaro device, how can you see that and how to update.
I can't find anything in the manuals.

  • It's not in the manuals, you would only know by contacting fibaro, don't know a place where they offer them for download, but to be honest, haven't searched for it either
  • I have ordered the Fibaro door sensor last week from Amazon.de, whit the coupon code 'WELKOM' for €10,- off: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B01GCPKON4/

(I had to order something else too, to get free shipping.)

Updates are made available via there own controller the hc2 which sends the update to the sensor. Information about the update can generally be found on the fibaro forum. I do not know if the updates can be individually extracted or downloaded but maybe possible.
  • Hello,

I am using the KlikaanKlikuit APIR-1250 sensor, together with Homey. After applying a simple antenna mod the sensor works fine now. Big advantage is the price (25,00 euro in NL)

Thnx again guys for your suggestions. I bought the Fibaro z wave plus motion sensor. I am planning to buy two more and some door sensors from Neo.

First I want to play with my first z wave device. Can anybody point me in the right direction for making some nice flows? My first idea 's I have as a noob

    - Motion in combination with Hue lights
    - Setting an alarm icm with motion sensor with speech, siren and push notification
