Do we need a system log?

I see a lot of issues described here without any insights in what happened. Wouldn't it be good to have a proper log file where you can see exactly what happened? Also what speech homey received, etc.

  • Whoops. I searched, but "log" and "logging" gave such a big result that I couldn't find anything.

    True! I think the logging will be introduced fairly soon, judging by the reactions from Athom. :smile:
  • I would love log. When developing it would be very nice to drop in extra logging outputted to this log.

    We're going to add a Notification Center, where events like 'Jack came home', 'Homey updated to x.x.x' etc. will be shown :-)

    To see what Homey heard, visit http://<homey_ip>/manager/speech-input/
    To see what Homey said, visit http://<homey_ip>/manager/speech-output/

    If you use http://<homey_ip>/manager/speech-input/, is this actually what Homey hears?
    Or is it translated by the Webkit engine as @BramSloot says?

    The text that appears above the input field is what Homey hears.

    Please note that, as also mentioned in the Kickstarter update, the microphone needs a lot of calibration from us to get right.
  • @emile;
    When and how are you calibrating the mic?
  • EmileEmile Administrator, Athom
    @MarcoF it's a very complicated process. I'll write a blog about it someday when I have the time :)
  • @Emile ;
    • How? Special (mic) (firmwar) update or ?
    • When? On every 1/2/4 weekly Firmware update or ?
    A lot of users have big troubles to get voice work, so it would be nice to know what the calibration plans are.

    Software only. Expect 4 - 8 weeks before it's considered `good`.
  • Great to hear. Are the inputs from all Homey's who are alive used for this?

    Yep! At least the 'OK Homey' training data.
  • do you guys save voice data?
  • Is this an automated process?  If you have to listen to the data from the voice training, I think you will be hearing a lot of cursing!  :#

    Off topic, but does this mean that basically I could open the "speech-input" page on any mic-equipped device that runs Chrome, and it'll work as an extra mic? That would be cool :)
  • I tried that yesterday, but Homey didn't react to it.  Don't know if it's supposed to...
  • It did for me, at least for typing. I could type "play some music by rammmstein" and it worked...

    Does this have consequences for the shipment of the next batch? Or was this a for seen action?
  • Aaaaaaand back on topic :smile:

    I don't really understand why there will not be a proper log. I mean, a notification center just displays what happened in understandable sentences and is mainly focussed on end-users.

    What I'm looking for is just a raw/plain log somewhere hidden in the geek area where you can just see all the details about what happened and what went wrong. Especially during this first period when a lot of issues will appear I can imagine that for Athom it's also good to have proper logging. Or do you already get this through another channel?
  • +1 to raw/plain logging!
    Better 10 log line to many, then 1 line not logged.
  • What we want is SSH access and be able to pull a syslog.
  • @MennoVanGrinsven ;
    I think we can forget that.....or in dutch; dat kun op je buik schrijven.
  • @MarcoF ,
    I'm starting to feel a challenge coming up  B)

    Take it!

    I would love to have SSH access, but i think (and hope for Athom) its highly secured/restricted.

    Also for development this would really help.
  • Small bump. Apparently the logs we send to Athom contains lots of valuable info. Why are they closed to the users?
  • I also would love to be able to see raw log files.
